Mid Century Modern Bench Ideas

This can be a problem if you have invited guests for a barbecue or party-like gathering, but you can solve it by building a patio bench or two to place along the perimeter of your patio. A mid century modern bench can be moved around easily for extra seating at the table, as well as to enjoy a conversation.

Instructions

Cut two pieces measuring 36 inches long from a 2-by-4. These 36-inch pieces will be the front and rear of their braces. Set 36-inch 2-of-4s parallel to each other on their sides. Cut two pieces measuring 15 inches long from 2-by-4s. These 15-inch pieces are sideways braces. Place sideways braces inside the ends of the front and rear seat braces to form a rectangular frame. Drill two guide holes on the outside end the front seat stag and through the ends of the side seat braces. Insert the tire screws and fasten. Repeat for the rear seat stag.

Cut four pieces measuring 18 inches long from 4-times-4 posts. These pieces are leg bench. Cut two pieces measuring 36 inches long from a 2-times-4 and one piece measures 36 inches long from 2-of-10 for the mid century modern bench. Stain all sides, at the end of the seat frame and cut wood pieces using latex outdoor paint. Place the patio bench frame on a flat surface. Place the ends of 4-by-4 legs inside the corners of the frame. Drill two guide holes on the outside of each corner of the seat frame and into 4-by-4 legs. Insert the tire screws and fasten. This will give you a total of four tire screws in each 4-times-4 leg.

Set the patio bench on the legs. Place one of the 2-by-4s incisions on the seat frame, matching the front board and sides of the frame. Drill holes through 2-of-4 and into the seat frame. Put tires screws and fasten. Place the second cut 2-of-4 on the seat frame matching the board with the back and sides of the frame. Drill holes through 2-of-4 and into the seat frame. Put tires screws and fasten. Center cut 2-of-10 between the 2-by-4s on the patio bench. Drill holes through 2-of-10 and into the seat frame. Put tires screws and fasten.

Tips and warnings

Drilling control holes before putting the screws prevents the wood from splitting. Staining the bench pieces before assembling allows you to reach all areas. These project instructions are available to build a patio bench 36 inches long. You can adjust the length of a longer bench, if desired. An extra bed under the seat in the middle of the bench may be required for support. You can also adjust for a smaller bench that can act as a side table.
